“Life truly begins only after you have put your house in order.” That’s how Marie Kondo begins her book ‘Spark Joy’; A book I randomly came across in a book store in San Francisco and a book that ended up being my key to create space for creativity.
Living in a two bedroom apartment we’ve learned to keep things simple and we’re always trying only to buy things that we really need, whether it’s food, furniture or clothing (I really like Maria’s approach). But even though our apartment is minimalistic decorated on the surface our closet & cupboard has been a mess. And I’ve always found it time-consuming to keep things in order.
A while back when August was napping I sat on our balcony and began reading through the pages. Kondo’s method is simple; ask yourself if it sparks joy. If yes – then you keep it. Ok. So far so good. But how do I know if it ‘sparks joy’, I thought. Here Kondo tells you to hold the item in both hands as if communing with it, and your body will respond by thrill or by feeling heavy. In the beginning it was a little difficult and I felt a bit like a crazy woman talking to her shoes. But basically I found out just to trust my intuition, and I have now finished the whole apartment – each category at the time, which is another of Kondo’s principles; tidy by category, not by location.
It has now been a month since is finished tidying our apartment and I have noticed a change. I feel lighter. And I feel inspired.
